The story is set in a fictional Southern backwater town in 1957. Considered part of the Black Arts Movement, he is known for his satirical explorations of race relations in America. William Kelley was just twenty four years old when this, his debut novel was first published. This powerful and emotive story had me hooked from the first pages and even as I write this review I cannot stop thinking about it. I wholeheartedly agree, this book was one of the best books I have read in a very long time and will stay with me forever.

First published in 1962, "A Different Drummer" is written by the late African-American writer William Melvin Kelley and who has been described as the "The Lost Giant of American Literature".
